Another band graduating from the Floyd comp to a sole release was The Vagrants, with their ‘Gone’ 7” (LK 32). Featuring Dave Henwood on drums, who would also sit in for Filth, The Wynona Riders and Pot Valiant, The Vagrants had been carving it’s own unique niche of emotive brooding rock since the late 80’s.
The ‘Gone’ EP sets the premise for the suggestion that given more time to develop, perhaps a killer album could have been in the works for this East Bay band that was standing aside when lined up with what was expected of the punk ‘formula’ of the day. With three compositions on show, an undercurrent of introspection, the Vagrants debut also was soaked in subtleties, including the downplayed black and white artwork.
Lookout was however proving that the scene surrounding Gilman and Berkeley was a hotspot for bands seeking out a point of difference, and breeding the mentality of setting itself apart. As the 1990’s had come into view, the local documented scene that Lookout had been putting forth was indeed not only a quality network, but a splintered individual calling of talented bands working in the underground – Cringer, Blatz, Monsula, Filth, and The Vagrants as prime examples, all enjoying their own voices, while retaining the punk sensibilities contained with the local scene.
LK 33 was a planned release that never happened for the band ‘East Bay Mud’. When the recordings had been forwarded the quality had proved to be below par, with Lawrence Livermore canceling the release. Later a CD collection of East Bay Mud recordings was pitched to Chris Appelgren for consideration, by band member Jean Repetto, which was also not taken up on. Repetto however would make his mark on the next release for the label.
